Southwestern Public Health

Southwestern Public Health is a newly merged Health Unit that provides public health services to the communities of the County of Oxford, Elgin and the City of St. Thomas. With offices in Woodstock and St. Thomas, Ontario, Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) is dedicated to building a healthy community by promoting and supporting community health through the delivery of effective public health programs and services.

This is a very exciting time as SWPH looks to promote wellness, protect health, prevent injury and advocate for positive change in the communities it serves. Serving a population of approximately 204,000 residents in southwestern Ontario, SWPH is looking to recruit an ambitious experienced Program Manager who is a driven professional that will provide oversight, management and leadership to our public health programs and services.


Position:  Program Manager

Region:  Hamilton, Niagara, Haldimand Norfolk, Brantford, Burlington

Description:  Reporting to a Program Director, the successful candidate will contribute as part of a leadership team that oversees the work of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and support staff of SWPH. The successful candidate will be responsible for management, supervision, and oversight of the food safety, healthy environments, safe water, rabies and vector-borne management program at SWPH.

Essential Qualifications:
• Successful completion of a Bachelor of Applied Science from a recognized post secondary academic institution.
• Minimum of three (3) successful years of experience of prior health care leadership role and/or experience leading a team of individuals.
• Extensive knowledge of regulatory, inspection and enforcement requirements associated with the Health Protection & Promotion Act and the Ontario Public Health Standards Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills along with exceptional facilitation and coaching skills
• Effective leadership attributes to manage, motivate and develop a relationship with peers and individuals reporting to the position.
• Knowledge and ability to participate in budget development, management and implementation.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a wide range of professionals.
• Proven ability to be a team player while leading and providing guidance and consultation for front line employees.
• Experience in providing employee direction, goals, objectives and oversight to public health policy and program planning
• Experience in managing and adapting a risk management, hazard identification and assessment framework for program public health staff.
• Ability to promote the values of shared leadership and team collaboration.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and foster partnerships with internally and externally and external stakeholders for the benefit of the Health Unit’s programs and services
• A criminal reference check completed within the last six (6) months from a Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC), inclusive of vulnerable sector screening, will be required of the successful candidate.
• Valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable access to an insured working vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Certificate in Public Health Inspection granted by Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors as recognized in the province of Ontario.
• Minimum of 5 years prior working experience as a Public Health Inspector in a public health capacity is preferred.
